Emil Amos' Drifter's Sympathy

333

Emil Amos charts the birth and development of the classic archetype 'The Outsider', telling disturbing and often humiliating stories about growing up in a small town in the 90’s. Every other episode digs into the archaeology of lesser-known music to illuminate the same themes from a more objective, historical perspective.

    Strange & Wonderful
I feel Emil has definitely created something special here… I came for the story but soon was pulled into the music history, theory and obscure artist I’ve never herd, it’s a delight to say the least.

for anyone digging their way out
non "inspirational" comforting but candid companion for anyone digging their way out, you don't need to know music to feel this. listened while in recovery from a near-death accident that interrupted an internal crisis. this was home in the hospital and the weeks after. still my favorite

    I think I’m in love
Story telling of self as found from the inside out and outside in. Philosophy and reflection. Ego is checked. Sincere. Great music woven throughout. Thanks, Emil.

Masterful storytelling of personal and music history.
Emil has created an unparalleled audio experience that cuts deeper than other podcasts. It’s so personal that sometimes you think you’re reading someone’s diary, but the music woven throughout helps guide you to place where you end up looking back at yourself.

    thank you
Perfect arc. Told brilliantly. Most of us know these characters. Emil guides us in such a patient way towards a finish in which we are greater, grown, good people. Speaking about music as an all around holistic means and the craft of music as a form of therapy. I have been entranced for all of these seasons. Not only entertaining but also therapeutic to someone that grew up with music and psychedelics as the only available means of escape from our American paradox. Thank you.

Thank you for this. Polvo has been my favorite band for decades. It is its own language. Libraness, as well. It was like having a secret; I knew who had the best voice, guitar technique, tone, production und ungodly clever songwriting skills. No one ever heard of them. If they did, wouldn’t get it. Likely the very most important band in my life, all considered.

    The best.
This is my favorite podcast out there. It’s so well crafted. Emil’s sentence structures are so precise you think they must have been written and rewritten, edited and polished, but he manages to sound like he’s just talking to you personally. The content of his stories, along with distilled epiphanies, are the gold of his alchemy of lived experience. One gets to peer into the private, uncanny vistas of a psychedelic artist/intellectual. There’s just nothing like it elsewhere.

    The Outsider
There isn’t a way to review something this revolutionary. There is great depth here. I love the episodes “The Outsider,” “Rare Soundtracks,” “What Happens To A Guru,” “Satan Seller,” and many others. Who else makes music or tells stories like Emil?? No one.

Fascinating Storytelling and History on Music
Truly one of the only podcasts that I go back and listen to episodes again, just because I enjoyed the content so much. I was in High School and University in the early 90’s and Emil’s reflections on those times are relatable and compelling. Bittersweet pre-internet memories of the dig for knowledge of new sounds.

    Deep stuff!
Incredible music, so many great discoveries, and the personal stories are evocative & insightful.

    Since you asked:
A guru once advised me: “Don’t seek affirmation for your art. Instead, ask yourself, ‘How can I be a more *powerful* artist?’” That guru, however, does not appear in this podcast.

    Incredible and unique
Drifter’s Sympathy offers intriguing insights into drug treks while retelling the coming of age stories that made one of America’s greatest musicians. Every episode marked in asterisks follow Amos’ musical background and showcases his vast musical knowledge. Existential and endlessly interesting.

    Truly Insightful
This podcast is an amazing mix of rock/punk/outsider culture through the lense of someone who lived it. Great stories of personal triumph and growth along side troubling tales that challenge ones own understanding. Emil is a gift to us all, a true musician in an age of flimsy pretenders.

So good, I love the stories and the eps where he introduces us to different obscure songs. Entertaining and educational, I'd love a link to a playlist or something, I'm sure I'm not alone here. Emil has a complex taste in music, I'm all about it.

    Crazy powerful stories
Just amazing. A deep, honest dive into the nature of psychedelics and the process of chiseling a personality from raw life experience. Emil has a powerful gift for storytelling. Subtly excellent production quality too. This is something special.

    A unique podcast format
Emil is the guy you've always wanted to listen to records with. He's seems like he would've been your friend's cooler older brother when you were growing up. The soundtrack episodes might be my favorite podcasts of all time. Awesome mix of hard to find music and great stories. Please keep making more of these! Thanks Emil!

Hits home in a time where home is rarely hit
I feel this podcast definitely hits some frequencies with the young adult trying to make something out of their psychedelic amalgamation of teenage experiences. I don't know, I'm tired and just wanted to leave a rating. Awesome work, Emil.

    Perfect
One of my favorite things to listen to during my commute. Emil's life stories are really great. He also plays the perfect DJ on certain episodes where it's all about the music and has opened up my ears to a lot of things I never thought I would be into.

    Stories from my youth
I just discovered this amazing podcast. Like a low-fi radio lab with tales of a time I once remember from the voice of someone who took the plunge and gave it his all. Heartfelt storytelling with no apologies.

    👽👀 + 🎉👂🏽= 👌🏽
Emil is weird and listening to this will make you feel weird, but in a good way. Compelling storytelling and interesting (and fresh) use of sound and music. No frills, no cheap concepts, no novelty, just interesting people who know what they're doing and are creating art. Very cool.

    Weird in the best way
This podcast straddles the fringes between underground music, drug culture, psychedelics, mystery, lynchian weirdness, occultism, spirituality, philosophy, and the macabre. Emil Amos is a great storyteller, and his curated music episodes are excellent too. Highly recommended. I talk about and recommend this podcast whenever I get together with friends.
