The biggest moments in sports history have stories behind them which have never been told. In 1999, Brandi Chastain kicked the winning goal for the U.S. at the Women’s World Cup. Her victory celebration in a sports bra made for one of the most iconic photos in recent memory. But how did we get to a moment where a women’s sport became a national obsession? To answer that question, we have to go back. In Season 1, soccer journalist Grant Wahl traces that ’99 Women’s World Cup victory back to the origins of the U.S. women’s national team and the first Women’s World Cup in 1991. Featuring superstars like Mia Hamm, Michelle Akers and Julie Foudy; former coach, Anson Dorrance; and even ex-FIFA President, Sepp Blatter.

Learned so much, and so blown away by the history of, and inequality in women’s soccer. They were, and still are, an amazing group of women. Fight on!!

Great for ANY fan of soccer
Amazing story for any die hard USWNT fan and soccer fans in general. Shows how much fighting the USWNT has been doing since 1991 til today honestly. You’d think by now it was all different. Grant Wahl did a GREAT job with this!

    Educational podcast
I’ve followed the Women’s World Cup for the last decade with great enjoyment! I wasn’t aware of the early days of the Women World Cup and these episodes were extremely educational, I strongly recommend everyone to listen to this podcast.

Great podcast - don’t miss it.
If this were a book, I’d say “I couldn’t put it down” - It’s a fabulous telling of USWNT story in the 90s - ( with info that is still relevant today.) I learned so much and really enjoyed listening to it. Great interviews.

    So much I didn’t know
I’m learning so much about women’s soccer and the USWNT journey, it’s been awesome. Brilliantly researched and put together.

    Fantastic!
What a wonderful account of the history of the women’s national soccer team! So much I hadn’t known; so much a propos to the equity struggles that still are going on. If you love women’s soccer, or women’s sports in general, you will love this podcast. If you don’t understand the current lawsuit that the US women’s national team has filed against the US soccer federation, you should listen to this podcast.

    Love it!
I’ve listened to the podcast twice through and recommend to friends and family—such a good story! I was a product of the ‘91 and ‘99 women’s soccer success. Cheers to those women who are so, so, so intelligent on and off the field!

Want to know how the USWNT got to be the juggernaut?
This series is well told and inspirational, just like the team. So much grit and heart from these early pioneers.

I loved everything about it except the explicit language usage. Can’t we have a cool podcast with clean content?

Inspiring, worth your time, mind opening
These women changed the game for us all. If you play soccer, watch it, or know someone who does, listen to this podcast. It will inspire you and help you understand the sacrifices that these incredible women made just to play the game they loved and be treated equally. Something that we all take for granted had to be earned by these women and they deserve the credit! I found the stories fascinating and inspiring and I would definitely recommend that you listen to this podcast.

    Great History of Sport Podcast
Listened to whole first season about the history of the Women’s World Cup. Lots of first-hand accounts via interviews woven together in an excellent narrative. As a supporter of the USWNT, I learned so much about the origins of the team and the sport. Inspiring to hear the journey of America’s first World Champion football team. At the same time, I am more angry than ever at our US soccer federation for not equally supporting our champions.

    Good concept
First episode was ok, but since I couldn’t care less about soccer, especially women’s soccer, I will sub and listen at next topic.

    Episode 5 fell short...
The first four episodes were amazing, great story telling... episode five felt different... left a lot on the table, felt rushed to get an unfinished thought out... such an epic moment in the history and kinda mushed the last episode. Would love to hear about the 99 team and its successes to finish the story...
  • Jdaly007
    Fantastic!
On the doorstep of the 2019 Women’s World Cup, this was a great listen! As a husband to a wife that played women’s collegiate soccer in the 90s and to my children (girl and boy) who now play in our local youth club, this story is truly inspirational. The road is hard and the torch has been passed. My hope is that U.S. soccer learns how to stand by their “One Nation, One Team” campaign.....

    Incredible Story
What an incredible story to tell! I knew nothing about this 91 team and to hear their story was inspiring and moving. Thanks SI!
  • dansnktwom
    Great!
Wonderful series. Even if you have no interest in watching the games in France, Wahl’s presentation of the off field fight between the federation and the women’s team is worth a listen. It’s a celebration of heroes.

    Chills!
Born in 1987, I grew up absolutely idolizing these women. What a beautiful and inspirational story- goosebumps and tears in each episode! Can’t wait for the rest. Thank you for remembering these legends so wonderfully.

    Nostalgia alert
If you have any memory of, or feelings from the ‘99 World Cup, this podcast is for you. Hearing how hard these women fought with literally zero support is awe-inspiring. I’m forever a fan of soccer, of female athletes and particularly of the beloved ‘99ers!

Know The History to Understand This Generation
I’ve been a die-hard USWNT since 1996 after they won the gold medal in the Olympics. This podcast is phenomenal in understanding the true grassroots of the USWNT. The team of players today, some weren’t even born when the team won the first WWC in 1991. To truly understand the team today, you have to go back to the beginning and I’m so glad this podcast was created. Grant Wahl does a great job storytelling the story of the beloved USWNT! OOSA OOSA!
  • SoundersTillI Die
    Outstanding!!!!
I can’t wait for episode 4 to drop, but also am dreading the end the week after. These women were/are my hero’s and it is a joy to listen to their stories and deepen my understanding of the trials, tribulations, and disrespect they endured in rising to become the best in the world. They are awesome and these stories are inspiring. Love it!!!!
  • Schlep1976
Not just a must for soccer fans; a must for fans of American history
The storytelling is great; the editing is great; the interviews are great. The story itself needs to be told. Yeah, theres no doubt that Wahl’s singsongy talking style is kinda goofy. Get over it. The story transcends the voice by a ton.
  • GLBnyc
    Great World Cup Prep
Grant. Thanks for putting this historical podcast together. Love it. It’s required listening for my soccer loving daughter as well.

A sports and soccer fan’s must listen
Grant does a phenomenal job of bringing the story of the USAWNT to life in a way the goes far beyond a name or two, an image or two. The real stories of the real struggle of athletes playing for the love of the game and their country. A fun and informative listen.

    Great history of USWNT!
I was hooked after Episode 1! The stories are great, especially hearing them from the players. Highly recommended for those who care about women’s sports and soccer fans.
  • lempika7
    informative, great storytelling
One of the best oral history recaps I've heard on how the 1991 team fed into the 1999 USWNT phenomenon, with the right amt of backstory to put it into the bigger-picture context
  • ncan22
    Love this!
Love learning more about the 91 team and history of the USWNT. Keep it going!
