babayaga_88Let the guests speak plzLove the guests and the musical history shared on QLS but there's just too many people chiming in and Quest, we know you're an encyclopedia of music, but let the people who were actually there tell their own story without interrupting them or trying to guess everything. thx

UfI’m igdiktxt dboxerFirst musical memories part 1 what a trip!Love the show, but this episode got me thinking about my first musical memory. Can’t say this was the very first, but I remember sitting at the board in Wizard Sound Studios in NY watching Ian Hunter recording That Girl Is Rock And Roll, maybe 1982. I was probably 9 or 10. My dad worked with Eddie Kramer, who might have been working this session, as a piano tuner for the studio. Dad had a piano repair/refurb business back then. So that was probably my very first musical memory- the sounds of him tuning a piano. He had a particular repertoire of scales and chord progressions to get the tuning just right. If you ask me, the Ian Hunter song isn’t great, but it sure left an impression and the session blew out my ears, but this way before the days of hearing protection for little kids. Thanks for the trip down memory lane and for always putting out great episodes, QLS!

BanjothebanditWhy are the ads so loud?Great podcast but why are the ads so loud? You have to increase the volume to hear the interviews and then turn it down when the ads come on or else they’re startlingly loud. Definitely takes away from enjoying the show

SoupnationI skip anytime Laiya talksLaiya is cringe.

ADJNAMEDSLASH/Who’s Roots?Yes, Alex Haley was sued for plagiarism in 1978 after author Harold Courlander claimed that Roots contained passages from Courlander's 1967 novel, The African. Haley agreed to pay Courlander $650,000 (2 million dollars in today's terms) as part of an out of court settlement.

Pacem2004Great podcast!I’ve enjoyed every episode and have learned so much. The conversations are interesting, thoughtful and flow really naturally. I’d love to hear an episode with Hamid Drake as guest - I’m not sure how to suggest that so putting it here. He’s an amazing artist and has great insights.
-
SpeedyGrayRaucousWhat a shameThat these wonderful interviews are interrupted again and again with the same ads playing in the middle of sentences. I can’t stand it. It can be done so much better.

ocean_dweller_415Music History 🥁🎤🎙️🎸💜This podcast should be housed in the Library of Congress!! I have learned and continue to learn so much about American music history and the songs + artists that made their mark on it. The stories behind the music are phenomenal and the funny bits are SO FUNNY! 😆 Thank you, Ahmir and QLS Team and please keep doing what you’re doing! 💜

ArtfullyHCongrats on your Oscar!Thank you for being the music historian you are and for highlighting African American contributions to the fabric of and influence to American and world music. Your work is very important and appreciated. 1.23.2024 I am so glad you folk are actually coming back with new material. I had cut the cord permanently. I happened to check in after a long absence and I was pleasantly surprised to listen to an episode the other day and that was refreshing. I was to yell out, “I know you’re busy, kudos to that, but you got a following and where you been, what are we to do but leave”?! No, I refuse to listen to archival episodes!

Negus4-A CommentGood morning, one of your latest guests, Paradise Gray, around the 16:33 mark of the first episode positively identified a person that commonly is called by a previous name and i have never heard it before on any platform. Thank you.

Life8090Andre 3000 and PrinceLoved the Andre 3000 interview. And the encounter with Prince at a club on Sunset - it was the Mondrian Hotel. My friends and I were there. We were leaving and noticed Andre 3000 walking in. So we turned right back around and went back into the club. The DJ was playing Hey Ya as he walked in. And not long after than we saw Prince sitting at a table with his wife. A bodyguard was standing in front of the table. The most random, awesome night!

Rick 645446669Do you want more???It’s so strange that I played the background when I was on tour with you and LL Cool J tried Paul quest, de la soul… I remember at the house of blues on Sunset. You were the only person that signed my vinyl record, and I still have that vinyl record with the ticket stub inside that vinyl record in my storage unit and circle With tribe called quest I’m going to shop at Bankhead mall and having somebody introduce me to fife dog… I’m learning so much about music listening to this podcast and at the same time I regret not bringing all my albums for you guys to sign!!! but at least in my storage unit I have an unmoor shirt signed by all the members of tribe, called quest on the tour. keep doing what you’re doing bro you’re teaching us and killing it on all levels.

pepesilvia79Frustrating!This podcast had potential, but as many other reviewers have already pointed out, hearing the hosts frequently talk over and interrupt the guests is incredibly frustrating. Sometimes it seems that Laiya intentionally derails conversations she's not personally interested in, even if everyone else in the room is clearly engaged. I have no idea why Unpaid Bill and Sugar Steve are in the room most of the time other than to make an occasional unfunny joke. And I'd bet money that the show's namesake is just reading the guest's Wikipedia page as he talks to them because he rarely asks some of the most obvious follow-up questions, and I've followed along on Wikipedia while listening a few times. On the positive side, Phonte often asks some really insighftul questions and follow-ups. And whatever happened to Boss Bill? You could often tell that he spent more than just a few minutes preparing for these interviews. Everyone else is obviously winging it.

KissMyGritsSonMissing The ObviousHow do you have Shanice and Tracie Spencer on TOGETHER and don't ask about their respective Family Matters episodes??

Van GloriousQuestlove, The FantiviewerQuestlove is a, “Fantiviewer.” Along with his two cackling, annoying minions in the background, I have no choice but to give this podcast, 👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽. 🗣️BOOOO!!!!!!!!

I Need A Cheeseburger ASAPFavorite podcast! But……I wish Quest would let his guests fully answer questions and allow his cohosts to ask their own query without interrupting and side eyeing the observations that they have. The listeners are also music nerds too, and it’s hard to be all ears when this happens. Yes, the podcast is an organic thing and yes, pure excitement about all things music and art with the best of the best cannot be contained when certain guests come on, but pleassse for the love of whipped cream, stop interrupting. PLEASE. Other than that, I learn something new every time - a certain chord, shady business deals, how an obscure ad lib was created or what gear and instruments were used to make the best music.
-
Brooklyn.zooGreat showLove this show and although its mainly a hip hop show i really appreciate the diversity of the guest. Although this wont get read i think Anderson.Paak would make a great guest...one drummer interviewing another.
-
Former musicianIn response to that “annoying” womanHer name is Laiya so if you’re going to insult her, at least say her name. For the record, she’s NOT annoying, she’s just too much for you to handle and that’s ok. I’m sure there’s a support group out there for folks like you. Now on to the podcast. This is GOLD. So much knowledge but packaged in a way that’s easily digestible. I never leave a podcast feeling like it was too long or anything like that. EVERYONE adds something special to this show and I’m blessed to have found it. Keep on keepin on!

TaurusVOBest out right nowThis podcast is a music nerds dream

Lanell12000Great Podcast But…..This is a great podcast but the female on the podcast is annoying. She is overly loud and talks over everyone. It’s VERY Annoying and as I read other comments I’m glad I’m not the only person that feels this way. Why is she here again? Please ask her to stop and chill out or remove her from the podcast.
-
K. KirkJimmy Jam is the best episode!Still looking for an episode to top Jimmy Jam, but overall, it’s a great podcast for music lovers and historians and those who like a great story.
-
Locabella328My 4- star reasonLaiyah has got to go! She will interrupt with nonsense and then be like “oh oops nevermind” so irritating! And Quest, as you interject with your own experiences, sometimes they are so long-winded… I’ve forgotten the original topic!
-
SoulwonderfulGive thanks! This is a specific review for the Taboo episode… Wow, I can’t share how refreshing it is to hear men of color speaking openly about their physical health and relating as HUMAN BEINGS and BROTHERS! Please don’t underestimate the impact of sharing this dialogue. Thank you thank you!

DeborahH7Great Podcast and I Am a Consistent ListenerI have a been Roots fan for decades. I was thrilled when Questlove/Amir began this podcast and I thoroughly enjoy the dynamics each of the cohosts bring to the show(Laiya, Phonte, Sugar, Boss Bill, and Unpaid Bill). In addition, I am a huge music fan of all genres so I enjoy learning from the guests while they converse about the various aspects of the business. I would only offer one suggestion for Questlove: Quest, please allow your guests to finish their thoughts before interrupting them to ask another question. The guests will be starting to comment or answer the previous question with an interesting point and you will interrupt them. I’m sure it’s from the excitement of them being on the show but your listeners would like for the guest to finish their thoughts. Sometimes you or the guest will circle back to what they were going to say. But, other times, it doesn’t happen and your listeners will have missed a gem of an opportunity to hear another aspect of their career and/or life. Please consider my humble suggestion. Keep up the great work!! Thank you

Kat-teeAlan Leeds is Legendary! This Alan Leeds trilogy is everything! The man is a walking, talking music history book and the JB stories are classic. Note- People attending shows at the Apollo (where JB recorded his live albums) during mid-day, mid-week hours might be those who worked on the weekends and had a weekday off. Some had to catch a show while the children were in school. Mondays, for example, were for service workers like beauticians, waiters, theatre ushers, etc. These workers provided the services that most people sought on the weekends. For their benefit, places like the Apollo had a variety of hours. Not the best business model after a while but that’s how it was up until the mid-late 1960s.
-
aluis9Absolutely fantastic and in depth show but…Too many ads during the show. I feel like I’m eating TV.
-
yhfeazvJohn McClainLove the show. Okayplayer since ‘98. Quest keeps asking for an interview with John Mclain. I believe he suffered a debilitating stroke and is unable to speak. But he is somehow still the co-executor of the Michael Jackson estate…
-
RzaR3ctorDives So Deep You Need Scuba GearEven though Questlove has encyclopedic knowledge of pop music history, he always stays curious. His conversations are wide ranging AND deep, but never laborious. The co-hosts (shoutout Phonte, The Bills, and Laiya and Suga Steve) each bring something unique to the table. Makes listening to music a more fun experience.

fcknampersandThe reason I listen to podcastsI was staunchly against podcasts. I went out of my way and made sure to sleep on all of them. All! But then I heard QLS with Biz. Changed my life and I have seen the light! Thank you Questo!
