The Overpopulation Podcast

43

OVERSHOOT tackles today’s interlocked social and ecological crises driven by humanity’s excessive population and consumption. The podcast explores needed narrative, behavioral, and system shifts for recreating human life in balance with all life on Earth. With expert guests from wide-ranging disciplines, we examine the forces underlying overshoot: from patriarchal pronatalism that is fueling overpopulation, to growth-biased economic systems that lead to consumerism and social injustice, to the dominant worldview of human supremacy that subjugates animals and nature. Our vision of 'shrinking toward abundance' inspires us to seek pathways of transformation that go beyond technological fixes toward a new humanity that honors our interconnectedness with all beings. Hosted by Nandita Bajaj and Alan Ware.

    Overpopulation podcast
I keep coming back to these podcasts. They are truly excellent. This material should be heard by everyone. It will be worth your time

Rational, respectful, and thoughtful discussion of the problem of human overpopulation
No other podcast does such a fine job of looking unflinchingly but thoughtfully at both the challenges of and solutions to the world’s overpopulation problem. Podcasters and interviewers Nandita Bajaj and Alan Ware are extremely knowledgeable, and are well-prepared for each discussion. Their podcast guests provide the listener with a remarkable range of perspectives and expertise on the topic. The Overpopulation Podcast should be at the top of the listening list for anyone interested in halting the ongoing global ecological disaster, and in finding a path to true sustainability.

Most informative podcast on the population crisis I have listened to so far!
This podcast is so well put together and so informative, I only wish it reached more people. I am supportive of a declining population and believe that the population must halve in order to save humanity (we have just passed 8 billion people), not grow. After listening to this podcast, I now have more tools in my toolbox, more data, and a better understanding of how crucial this topic is. Listening to this podcast has reassured my decision to live a child-free life for all the selfless reasons. I am even further inspired to continue my education in population studies, which am currently looking at Ph.D. programs where I hope to become a contributing members in the small community of those who favor population decline. This podcast has been inspiring, motivating, and above all, educational. Thank you for all the amazing work you have done! I highly recommend this podcast.

    Educational and Inspiring Podcast
This podcast is so educational and puts together everything that involves the impacts of human overpopulation, pronatalism, overconsumption and anthropocentrism on the earth, people, and wildlife. Each episode has a new guest talking about a different topic. I love how it discusses delicate and critical subjects with respect, assertiveness and dedication. Worth listening to! Suhei from Mexico

    Excellent podcast, important topic
The Population Balance team do an excellent job of finding interesting interviewees, each with a different story to tell, on the subject of overpopulation. Such an important issue, this podcast helps to spread the word in a calm, thoughtful way. Standout recent episodes include Phoebe Barnard and Mechai Viravaidya.

Funny, wise, clear-headed commentary on (and solutions for) our civilization
Like many of us, I have so little time to read and so I love listening to Nandita Bajaj’s and Alan Ware’s wonderful podcasts while I’m cooking supper, walking the dogs or harvesting vegetables. They’ve managed to find the perfect podcast balance: humour, great guests, surprising stories, and a new slant on many things which many people won’t have thought about before. This podcast deserves to be listened to by teenagers and twenty-somethings, especially, in cities and towns all around the world…. and by those in a position to guide them.

    Fun, Educative and Inspiring
This podcast brings together topics like climate change, social justice, animal welfare, and population studies in a fun and educative way. You’ll both laugh and learn as you listen to discussions with a vast array of all-stars in so many themes. The population is fantastic for learning about overpopulation, of course, but also delves deep into so many other themes, events and issues. I’ve really enjoyed the episodes from the start - and the Paul Erlich one was great, along with Eileen Crist, if you are just starting. Perfect for driving or walking!

    Important, informative & inspirational
You’d think this podcast would be dry because the topic seems wonky, but nope it is RIVETING. Every time I listen I think “everyone needs to know this stuff”. Nandita Bajaj is a fantastic host. The guests are diverse and expert. Give this podcast a listen- your mind will be opened. I’ve already learned so much!

    MOST IMPORTANT MESSAGE TODAY
Climate Change is merely ONE SYMPTOM of the MUCH bigger problem of WAY too many people, consuming WAY too much!! We MUST END our relentless obsession with GROWTH (population &/or economic). Endless growth on our finite, dying planet is IMPOSSIBLE! ... 'not to mention a suicidal Ponzi scheme. My cynical side has given up on preserving the humans ... I'm much more concerned about the trillions of TOTALLY INNOCENT non-human lives that we are taking down with our endless greed & stupidity.

    Work and or kids
Love the show, and the topic. As a woman I strongly resent the fact that I have to work instead of have a family, or that I have to work at all. I have never been able to find fulfillment in work outside of my home, and I don’t think that’s my problem. It’s a societal problem. But I don’t see how it’s feasible financially or within the environment to have a traditional family, which is what I would rather have had in lieu of work. I don’t feel that it’s a fair trade off that now I’m forced to work and earn a living instead of create a home. I wish you’d discuss the women that don’t want to work outside the home more. How does she grapple with this conflict?

    The Big Picture
Thankfully, Dave Gardner and crew provide a welcome voice of calm, thoughtful context. Context is sorely lacking in the modern world as our left brain hemispheres fixate on small-ball minutiae. We are adrift in a sea of information without a paddle of wisdom. It is stunning how many “smart” people fail to grasp the severity of human overpopulation. Am I worried that human society is going to collapse? No, not really, as we have an amazing capacity for engineering our way out of jams. But tigers, trogons, and trout, not so much. “I love Man not the less, but Nature more,” said Lord Byron. I agree.

The most important underreported issue in the world
This podcast is an excellent source of well thought out discussion around the issues of overpopulation. After reading "Countdown" by Alan Weisman, I became fascinated with this topic. This is the best and most professional podcast you'll find on the subject!

I haven’t listened to the podcast yet
I would just like to take moment and give some acknowledgement to the producers of this podcast. it’s very encouraging to see this message on the monstrous overpopulation be discussed, one cannot discuss climate, wars, poverty crime and even idiocy without the mention of overpopulation within same sentence. Loveless relationships and marriages only for status or business, who embark on having children foolishly do a disservice and a lack reliability for not only themselves, but of their fellow human being and all forms on this planet. “Salome” (Peace) for your efforts

    Wonderful podcast
This is the most important topic that humanity should be talking about but it is rarely discussed. So many good points on this topic and excellent rounded view of the problem.

    Hopelessful Situation
This is a great podcast, very enlightening. Of all environmental-related programming, this show gets to the core issue underlying all others. We all could burn coal, drive SUVs, eat filet mignon and live in Mc Mansions sustainably if their were a fraction of the people and have no effect on climate, etc... Instead, we are barreling headlong into an enormous catastrophe. Overpopulation, topsoil erosion, climate change, overfishing, nuclear proliferation are all going to collide.

    Podcast of great importance!
Loved it. People need to get conscious about what's going on and how we need to deal with this. A deep ignored responsibility.
