The Europeans

104

The Europeans is a fresh and entertaining weekly podcast about European politics and culture, recorded each week between Paris and Amsterdam with fascinating guests joining from across Europe. This multiple award-winning podcast fills you in on the major European politics stories and other European news of the week, as well as fun and quirky nuggets that have been missed by most media outlets. Hosted by Katy Lee, a journalist based in Paris, and Dominic Kraemer, an opera singer in Amsterdam, The Europeans covers everything from elections and climate policy to the best new European films and TV shows. We also produce investigative podcasts about everything from the European farming lobby to oat milk. Yes, oat milk. Katy and Dominic are old friends, and the warmth and intimacy of their conversations will soon make you feel like you’ve known them a long time too. They approach topics with a light and humorous tone that makes The Europeans stand out from other European news podcasts, while remaining journalistically rigorous and meticulously fact-checked. The Europeans has been recommended by The New York Times, The Guardian, Buzzfeed, The Financial Times, and many other outlets. Katy Lee, a British-French reporter, has written for major outlets including The Guardian, Politico Europe, Agence France-Presse (AFP), Foreign Policy and The New Statesman for more than a decade, covering French and European politics and more recently, climate change. Dominic Kraemer, a British-German opera singer, performs across Europe when he is not co-hosting The Europeans, with roles recently at the Staatsoper in Berlin, the Dutch National Opera and the Münchener Biennale. The Europeans’ team is completed by producers Katz Laszlo in Amsterdam and Wojciech Oleksiak in Warsaw. You’ll hear them joining Katy and Dominic from time to time, particularly during investigative episodes like ‘The Oatly Chronicles’ and ‘The Big-Agri Bully Boys’. The Europeans’ breezy, informal approach to covering European news has won awards such as a Covering Climate Now award for an episode about the Swiss women who sued their government at the European Court of Human Rights demanding more climate action; Germany’s prestigious CIVIS Media Prize for ‘Mohamed’, an episode that explores the everyday life of a young undocumented man in Amsterdam; and best LGBTQIA+ short at the MiraBan UK Film Awards for ‘Josh and Franco’, the coming-of-age story of a father and son, both gay. Our guests have included everyone from major figures in European politics such as Alexander Stubb, now the President of Finland, and Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, to star chefs Asma Khan and Christian Puglisi, celebrated illustrator Christoph Niemann, and environmentalist George Monbiot. Since launching in 2017, we’ve talked about everything from elections in France, Italy and many more countries besides, to the politics of halloumi cheese in Cyprus, to why Donald Trump is so hard for TV interpreters to translate. We pride ourselves on covering European politics, European news and European culture from a pan-European perspective. You’ll often hear stories on The Europeans from parts of the continent that don’t usually receive enough attention from major international media outlets, especially Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. You might enjoy The Europeans if you also enjoy one of these other podcasts: The News Agents, On the Media, Today in Focus, Inside Europe, The Journal, EU Confidential, The Daily, The Globalist, Reasons to be Cheerful, The Media Show, Power Play, and The New Statesman. Whether you’re already a European news nerd, or simply someone who’d like to be better informed about what’s happening across Europe, The Europeans is the podcast for you.

    The smartest, nicest podcast
Katy, Dominic, Katz and Wojciech are the smartest, nicest hosts in the podcast universe. Disarmingly charming, kind people doing deeply researched journalism on pressing stories and the some of the most human stories. Best show in the game.

    Excellent wee pod
Just prefacing that I am an American, but the folks on this pod have done a better job keeping me up to date with the comings and goings of our friends across the pond than any I’ve encountered. I love this show, and am diligently working through the back catalogue. Only 140 to go, and there’s an ep on Northern Ireland in the queue which intrigues me, since I went to uni in Belfast.

    One of the best
I enjoy hearing the important happenings and interesting things that larger media outlets may have skipped over during the week. The Q&A episode was also great! It’s nice to hear the thoughts and backgrounds from the people behind the mics. One of my favorite sources of news and fun stuff!

    Production requires restraint
I was excited to listen to your oat milk episodes, but I am struggling to get through an episode due to the over-produced and unbalanced audio production. The volume peaks and dips consistently, and the background noises are grating and over used. The storytelling is solid, but the constant noise feels like the audio equivalent of subway surfer taking up half the screen of a tik tok.

    Like a warm hug
I look forward to this show every week. Comforting and informative. Love the “isolation inspiration” part!

Perfect mix of serious and silly
Dominic and Katy are so engaging and have a great rapport. They talk to informed guests about serious issues and yet always seem to be having a good time. As an American I’ve learned so much about Europe—both cultural and political—that is just not in the news here! I also appreciate that they try to briefly explain things for us uninformed Americans, yet the focus stays firmly on Europe. Now, Dominic, do try not to get Covid again, and congrats to Katy on your marriage!

    Essential
Thank you so much for this podcast. For an American like me, this is so informative for Lear big about issues and event in Europe that aren’t covered by the media here. I especially appreciate the episodes that take on climate issues.

Informative, insightful, entertaining and well produced
I've been listening to The Europeans for a couple of years now and without fail, every episode has been engaging, well produced with insightful stories about Europe that go beyond the headlines. As an anglo immigrant in Europe (France), this podcast helps me better understand and get to know this fascinating, complex continent that I have chosen as my home. You don't have to live in Europe to appreciate the content, you need only be curious or strive to be a Global Citizen. Katy and Dominic's good work deserves support. I am a Patreon contributor and encourage others who can contribute to do so, if even just $1/month. 😊

Dominic and Katy have made such a wonderful podcast. They really tackle some complicated and nuanced topics with ease, introducing us to some really amazing guests along the way.

    LOVE
I love this podcast! I started listening when my friend Katz hosted an episode, now it’s one of the things I most look forward to listening to every week. As an Irish American living in the USA and strongly considering a move to Ireland, this podcast has helped me get more in touch with European news. Thanks for your beautiful work!

    They’re Back!
Yippee, was going through Katie and Dominic withdrawals during their vacay. Missed their perfect blend of informative news and fun banter.

A fun, broad view of all the happenings in Europe.
As someone that hopes to move to Europe eventually, this podcast offers a great perspective on what is happening across the continent. After a few episodes you feel like you’re sitting in on a conversation with old friends. The hosts, Katy and Dominic, are well informed, witty and keep the tone positive, which is great given the amount of negativity we see in the news and online.

    My fix to understand Europe
I’ve been an active listener for the last year and the podcast has become part of my week. I really enjoy Katy and Dominic’s unique perspective as Europeans living abroad as well as their desire to dig into a wide array of interesting European topics which don’t typically get covered in the news. If you want want to broaden your knowledge of the continent including the ups and downs, work this podcast into your week!

    Love Katy and Domiinic
I get so much from this podcast. I'm a self-centered American so I need and enjoy the news from Europe. The best part, however, is the conversational way the news is delivered by the hosts. I love Katy and Dominic. I love their interaction with eachother. I love their knowledge of the subject. And I love the laconic way they deliver the news.

    The right touch
I’m a centrist American (with Europhile tendencies) who likes listening to different points of view before forming an opinion. This podcast is fun due to the likable hosts and their friendly banter. It’s like eavesdropping on a couple of smart, progressive European friends: Even if you don’t agree with all of their views, you walk away having enjoyed yourself and having learned something. For me, the deeper value of this podcast is the longer-form interviews with people close to current newsmakers. Katy’s questions are right on point. Keep up the great work, and I hope the podcast continues to grow!

    Fun & informative
This is an enjoyable way to learn more about Europe and keep up with the news from that corner of the globe. The two young hosts, Katy & Dominic, are long-time friends who live in different countries (France and the Netherlands). Their repartee is delightful!
  • ZG_BT
    Smart, funny, informative
One of my favorites - top of the list when I want information & intelligent delivery, but need a breath of fresh (Trump-free, Brexit-free) air.

    Humorous and In Inciteful
Great blend of interesting topics along with good guests. Dom and Katie add some nice humor to the subjects they cover. Excellent listening to keep up with European events and happenings!

    Not funny
This show tries to be funny but fails. It is a pity because the choice of topics is great. I would give the show a second chance if they improve the humour to make the small talk bits less lame.

Do yourself a favor and listen
Apparently my title wasn’t clear enough which is fine because I love to elaborate. There are jingles, there are interviews with so many incredibly interesting people, and the hosts do such a good job of finding really fascinating things going on in Europe! If you’re like, “Oh, I’m not that interested in politics.” let me tell you: this is still the podcast for you! They’ve talked about miniature horses, seed banks, wolf populations, sexy advertising campaigns, and so much more! If you’ve ever had the experience where you encounter Kohlrabi and tried to translate it and realized that the English word is also Kohlrabi (which the people around you were telling you the whole time) then let me tell you that there’s a relatable experience that awaits you in an earlier episode! (This legitimately happened to me as well as one of the hosts and we can’t be the only two people). Honestly, this podcast is two friends hanging out talking about interesting things they’ve come across in the past week. It’s funny, heartwarming, and all around delightful. Also, if you’re into politics, yes, they definitely cover stuff for you too!! Just listen, I promise you won’t regret it. P.S. I saw that there were 48 reviews and my first thought was that I wanted to be the 50th reviewer but then I was stunned at how there were only 48 reviews when this podcast deserves at least 4,000 so I immediately put my selfishness aside to write this 49th review. So this podcast is even encouraging altruistic behaviors! What more do you want?

Love this informative, entertaining, fun podcast! I learned about it when Katy and Dominic made an appearance on the Earful Tower podcast and now I'm hooked.

    Highlight of my week
Never thought I would look forward to Tuesday’s, but I do now all thanks to this podcast. I often times find myself giggling along to their banter, which probably has my coworkers in adjoining cubicles very concerned. Nonetheless, they highlight interesting and important issues in Europe & are entertaining as they do so.
  • atolbs27
Great quick recap of what’s happening in and around the continent!
This podcast is such a fun, quick look into the stories you may have overlooked happening in Europe each week. The hosts seem easygoing and clever and they bring in some great guests!

    Endearing and informative
I found this podcast in January and it’s become a wonderful part of my week. Katie and Dominic are delightful hosts, and I love their good hearted approach to news and insights I probably wouldn’t hear otherwise, ranging from silly to serious (and their musical stings are endearing in their own way for their...unstudied air, shall we say). And the guests!!! I can’t list all the amazing, enlightening, moving guest interviews they’ve already done, but I’ve purchased books, joined groups, and added other podcasts based on them.

    Faux-European Approved
Five stars! What? Yes, five stars and it’s entirely deserved. I first came across this podcast through, I think, a twitter retweet and downloaded a couple of episodes before an overseas flight. I’ve been a fan ever since (safely) hitting the tarmac. Katy and Dominic are an absolute delight to listen to, and as faux-European living in Germany from the States, I’ve long been searching for a fun way to digest all the news of this wonderfully complex continent — I just didn’t know it yet. The Europeans is hitting its niche like no other podcast and I look forward to what’s ahead. If you’re still reading this review — STOP. Just download, ffs.

    Charming and knowledgeable hosts
Katie and Dominic are such wonderful people to spend a half hour learning about Europe with. They enjoy each other a great day and also enjoy their guests and the subjects they talk about. Two minor points of improvement: I started listening on Episode 4 or so and it seemed that Katie and Dominic had stopped identifying themselves at the start of the show. Please keep doing so to make it easy to orient new listeners. Second, thus far, the scope of this podcast seems to be Western Europe + Poland. (There was one episode about the former Yugoslavia.) I would LOVE to hear more about the Baltic states, the former Yugoslavia, Ukraine, Belarus, Romania, etc. All in all, for this international relations loving American, this podcast is an awesome new addition to my weekly lineup.

    Informative and Witty
I really look forward to each podcast... they give a relaxed insight into current "happenings" around Europe, and feature brief but highly interesting interviews throughout each program. Perfect for weekend listening!
