The Things That Made England

118

An affectionate meandering through the things that make England the way she is – from HP Sauce to the Allottment, Aethelstan to the politics of Queuing. With Luke Baxter, Roifield Brown, David Crowther and Fiona Powell trying to make some sense of it all, though rarely succeeding it might be said. Fabulous
I have just discovered this podcast. As an expat of a similar age to Roifield and David I love this. I just wish I could be a third wheel and chat to the chaps about all these subjects!!! Also a devotee of The History of England!!! Andrew

    Wonderful!
I’m all caught up with The History of England, so I stated this treasure to get my David Crowther fix. Great job!

    Needed this Fix
Haven't been to the UK since Covid, so this podcast is a welcome substitute. Feels like I'm sitting in a London pub! Sorry for the corny analogy, I'm thoroughly American :-)

    So happy I found this
As an American Anglophile, I’m thrilled to have found this podcast. Just the right amount of humor, creativity, and new information. I’m excited to listen to all of the previous episodes and look forward to those in the future.

    Great Chemistry
I’m an American scooterboy/rude boy that’s a little bit of an Anglophile. The repartee between Roifield and David is as fun as it is educational, and I appreciate that they don’t take things too seriously. Keep up the great work, gents!

    David is supreme
Thoroughly entertaining! Although an American, the Ancestry DNA test tells me I am 75% British, so I am embracing my heritage by learning about the things that made England. David’s supreme intelligence and wit completely overshadows the other guy with the strange name. Even though it is a completely unequal match, I highly recommend this podcast.

    Excellent
Spectacular show on so many levels. David and Roifield’s wit and intellect belong in The Cabinet, if you ask me. Of all their shows, this is my fav.

    If You Love Britain.....
I cannot believe this podcast doesn’t have more people following it than it does. It’s brilliant! It’s so human and kind and knowledgeable and oh so British. It’s my daily fix in a world temporarily gone mad. Thank you boyz!!

    The things that make England
Completely enjoyable. I’d give it 5 stars but many things that make England are visual. Love the foodie episodes. Can I nominate the Cornish pasty for consideration?

    Great chemistry and hilarious!
Great chemistry between the two hosts, and also a pretty funny and interesting look into what it means to be English. Always a joy to listen. Keep it up!

    Bloody Brilliant!
Great banter between two great hosts. I am a long time fan of David and a new fan of Royfield. Keep us Yanks of English heritage up to date on the things that made England!

    Brilliant banter
The banter between the hosts is a perfect example of the things that made England. Well done. Good show.

    Fun and informative
As an expat I love connecting with anything about 'home'. Not only is this podcast great fodder for the brain but highly entertaining as well thanks to David and Roifield's banter.

    Great banter and debate
Roifield and David are wonderful. I lived in England and love listening to the debates on things that made a country I adore. Highly recommend. The Road Signs one is brill.

    Fun show
I also found this from the history of England. I’ve listen to every podcast and it’s always quite entertaining. It’s as though we are at a talking among friends. There are great many differences between the United States and the UK. This is a good way to have some Introspection of American culture. But most importantly it’s just a fun way to spend some time on a commute.

    English history
What a great idea to present little known but important bits of English history with humor and a lot of public input. Very enjoyable.

    Lots of fun...and informative
Maybe being an American makes this extra entertaining for me. I really enjoy the back and forth and the disagreements. It wouldn't be so entertaining if Roifield and David were more alike. This podcast is informative, but mostly I just find it fun to listen to. The social media round up at the end is great too!

    Love This Podcast
I got into this podcast via History of England and just love it! The easygoing banter and debate between David and Roifield is highly entertaining, and a particular highlight of the podcast is the FB review at the end. The audio quality is a little hit-or-miss, but who cares? Great show and I can’t wait to hear more. :)

    Anglophile American
I love these discussions between Roifield Brown and David Crowther. I came to this from David Crowther’s podcasts, but I absolutely love Roifield Brown. They are great together. My mother’s family is Irish-American (19th century) and my father’s is Welsh-American (18th century) so of course I was raised to reject that history and be an Anglophile. I’ve visited London a dozen times and other parts of the UK a biker of times. I have read more British literature than American. I have read and seen more British plays than American. Many of my favorite movies are British. After over 50 years of study I can say I don’t understand England very well at all. 20 years ago I thought I would move to England but I didn’t. I know now that I never will. This podcast gives me a sense of what I would have learned and lived if I had.

    Just press play
Two guys with lots of podcast experience putting their heads together about English things with beautiful English wit . Oh and Mr Brown , David is ALWAYS right .

another fine offering, featuring both David Crowther and Roifield Brown
two podcasters that I have enjoyed independently of each other, joining forces. Humorous banter plus a different view of England.

    Great new podcast
I’m a bit of an Anglophile and I find this podcast VERY interesting. I like the format where they defend their point of view to the other host.

It all makes so much sense
I am a big fan of History of England and naturally, I’d be curious about this podcast. I don’t know what Mr. Onestar is thinking, perhaps he has no sense of irony. In fact, I feel irony is a possible future ep! I am truly enjoying these podcasts. I like the banter, the silliness, and sometimes truly obscure subjects (hp sauce). An easy breezy 5 stars for these two gents.

    I love this show
The content is interesting, but the best part is the interaction of the hosts. I wish I could be hanging out in a pub chatting with David and Roifield.
  • doitlikepruett
I'd love to hear more but please fix the audio
Royfield's audio is distractingly bad and the levels are off. If you can fix it I would listen more! Chat over skype and both record yourselves on your own studio mic perhaps, then just combine the tracks!

    Entertaining & Educational
So nice to hear Roifield again, but in a totally different type of podcast. He is so amiable, insightful and is a joy to listen to. Interesting topics so far and I feel I’ve learnt a lot, especially in the accents episode. I had no idea that Danelaw could have had such an influence on how we speak today! Keep up the good work guys!

    Great new podcast
It’s interesting to hear David in a slightly different context from the History of England. I look forward to upcoming episodes—I like the mix of obviously important historical stuff with the less serious stuff. I would humbly request a bit more translation for us dumb Americans—I know it’s a show about England and we should keep up, but sometimes the references where you assume we know what you’re talking about are a challenge. For example, what is the recent scandal you refer to in the Ska episode?
  • friendly woods
    It's fun.
I like this different side of David Crowther. Roifield Brown is the perfect foil. Great idea, keep the episodes coming.
  • CO GoT Fan
    Love this
This is a fantastic show and I love the banter back and forth. The 1066 show was amazing.
  • This Nickname is taken . . .
    Catastrophe strikes for David Crowther
As a huge fan of David Crowther's 'History of England', which I have listened to for years, many of the episodes multiple times, imagine my delight when he advertised on his podcast that he was starting a new project! I subscribed immediately, rather liked the first episode on 1066, and then listened to the trainwreck that was the Ska episode. David does fine, but his partner, Roifield Brown, is a disaster! This man has a chip on his shoulder a mile wide! He is pedantic and argumentative to David, overrules his ideas and opinions, and very obviously holds the white heritage of the British Isles in light regard. What a tragedy! This could have been great if David had picked a different co-host!

    The Things That Made England
I’m hooked. Entertaining and informative. Great chemistry between the co-hosts. But I hope that the rest of Britain will get their due as well.

    Looking forward to more!
As a fan of David’s History of England podcast I decided to give this one a try recently. I found the first episode engaging, and, as an American, quite enlightening too. I had no idea how passionately the English felt about 1066! Perhaps that is just these 2 guys, but still I’d never considered it anything more than ancient history. I am anxious looking forward to more!
