Meeple, Myself, and I

19

Meeple, Myself, and I is a podcast by an avid solo gamer (Jason Montgomery) for solo gamers. Inspired by This American Life, Invisibilia, Radiolab, and other "spoken essay"-style podcasts, this fully scripted show tries to do things a little bit differently.

    A real pleasure!
Jason puts together a real podcast treat, experimenting with different ways to present his journey with games, and how that fits into his life. There are a lot of board gaming podcasts where the hosts haven’t prepared and incoherently talk for an hour, but not here. This podcast is well scripted, well thought out, and well done. Not to mention it’s solo only! Just icing on the cake!

    Excellent essays and personal commentary
One of the best board gaming podcasts I’ve listened to. Jason produces a stellar mix of content, and I originally came for the tightly written essays and stayed for the personal commentary. Thank you for sharing your insights and your story.

    Loving it
I was introduced to this podcast by a friend of the host after I mentioned I enjoy solo gaming. I am really enjoying these episodes and plan to look into some of the featured games.

A great podcast for board gamers
This is a wonderful board gaming podcast. With a focus on solo play, the host does a great job of bringing a wider perspective and diving deeper into these games. I really enjoy the length of these episodes and solid production. Looking forward to more episodes to come.

A thoughtful podcast about solo gaming.
This Radiolabesque podcast about solo board gaming is thoughtful, well structured and superbly written. Unlike many other podcasts where hosts speak off the cuff, host Jason Montgomery clearly puts a great deal of effort into writing and refining his scripts, which offer nuanced and in-depth takes on the niche, but growing, world of solo board gaming. At only two episodes in, there are a few hiccups here and there (very occasionally, for instance, I find that the volume level differential between Jason’s voice and the underlying music can be a bit off, so as to make hearing Jason a bit difficult), but this is a minor criticism that I’m sure will be resolved in time as the production becomes ever more refined. I look forward to hearing more from Meeple, Myself, and I, and I strongly encourage those interested in solo gaming to give it a listen.

    A great new approach
I have long been a fan of Jason’s written reviews. Funny, engaging and insightful his work has always been worth the time to read. So I was very excited to discover he is also now working in the audio format. His audio style is interesting and to the point. He has removed some of the time consuming banter, news and discussion of Kickstarters that has become the staple of so many podcasts. Instead he focuses on his experiences. He does a great job sharing why things do, and do not, work with him which may also inform his listeners as well. With so much content, in written form, already made I am sure he will have plenty of content to share and I look forward to hearing more! Edit I just finished Jason’s second podcast and I must say, if I could, I would add ANOTHER star to this podcast if I hadn’t already given it top marks. In his second episode he did a fantastic job giving an informed, clear and wonderful review of a popular game...and why it is NOT good for solo. He is able to tread that fine line of informing his listeners about why a game may or may not work for solo while still acknowledging the strengths of that game that even makes fans pleased even if he is not recommending it!

Interesting Take on a Board Game Podcast
The show’s format is unique for the genre, which makes it fresh and interesting. I also like the shorter length as I don’t always have time to listen to the ramblings and inside humor of a typical board game podcast. Jason starts with a basic summary of game play, then dives right into the review. He shares some interesting insights, things I did not consider, which make it worth the time. I would rate the podcast higher, but I find the music distracting and the intro is definitely weird. I’m sure there is a method to the madness, but I am crazy enough already.

A Must-Listen for Any Solo Gamer
As of this writing, there are only two episodes of this podcast available. I just finished listening to the second. When I listened to the first, one of the things that occurred to me about halfway through was “this does not sound like someone’s first episode of their first podcast.” It sounded professional; well-paced, with good sound quality and pace, clean interstitial music, and nicely structured. The second episode sounded even more polished. Those qualities aside, the content is what really appeals to me. I’ve enjoyed Jason’s reviews on bgg for some time, and everything that I’ve enjoyed about those translates well to this medium. I’ve discovered games that I’d otherwise not have considered, and shied away from games based on things he’s pointed out about them. He’s thoughtful and thorough and I enjoy his perspective. Here’s hoping that his run on the podcast lasts as long as he enjoys it. I look forward to more.

    Thoughtful insights and punny!
Great stuff! Love hearing your thoughts - your presentation style makes it easy to listen and comprehend without feeling overwhelmed by a flood of concepts, rules, and ideas. It’s also clearly distinguishable whether you’re presenting a fact, or an opinion. But the reason I really listen is for the ARPEGGIOS! Will return for the next episode!

The NPR of board game podcasts
When you say you are aiming for a this American life feel, you absolutely excelled. I am thrilled to see the podcast back in action and looking forward to more deep dives into individual games and the highs and lows of what makes them tick.

Great Narration, succinct and well thought out
While listening to the second episode the thought of “This is a great show…I should write a review for him”, popped into my head. There was a giveaway announcement at the end of the episode and all the more reason to do so! Regardless of the giveaway, I really did feel like the show was engaging and felt very easy to listen to. As a voracious board game podcast listener (something like 30 shows subscribed to), not many new podcasts catches my attention nowadays. I like Meeple, Myself and I because Jason does an excellent job in summing up a game without bloating the content with gameplay summary, rules explanation. Very succinct, honest and insightful all around. I think the little tidbits of music he injects into his narration is a very nice touch. Perfect length and superb writing and editing.
