Sharon LikeFilm critics for the 21st century.Preface– I earned a bachelor’s degree in film and subsequently stopped watching movies for years and years. I went into the machine with hopes of writing and directing and left with a tired distaste for all of it. HOWEVER, nothing has gotten as close to reinvigorating my original interest in film as this podcast has. What could have been an irritating vanity project from two podcast network Founder/Producers (Joe Cilio and Brett Boham), is actually an extremely thoughtful and hilarious show that any real-deal fan of the medium will appreciate, if not only for the overwhelming and sincere love of the art form. By pitting the “art house” against “mainstream” cinema, without signaling a default preference, Weekend at Bergman’s avoids the traps of both pretentiousness and blind pop-culture fandom that many of today’s critics are likely to fall into. Once you get to know Brett and Joe’s personalities and tastes, you can safely believe that they care equally about entertainment value and intellectual intangibles. The nail-biting high stakes of one movie per week being thrown into the “trash canon,” never to be watched again by either party, adds a new dimension of pathos into the mix. You can hear (or see, for Forever Dog Plus subscribers) these men struggling, grasping, grieving, and sometimes bargaining with the cold reality that they must live the rest of their lives without watching a movie that they know is truly great. To shed additional light on the title of my review, and its first paragraph, my spiral into full-on disillusionment with cinema was fueled by a perpetually unscrupulous film industry, the exhausting rhetoric of academic film theory, and an over-saturation of media that was fed to me from the established “canon,” (the movies that a small group of rich white guys agreed are great). Weekend at Bergman’s introduces an antidote to pretty much all of these issues. The hosts are not afraid to draw attention to the ugliness that exists behind-the-scenes. They aren’t afraid to pick Weekend at Bernie’s over The Seventh Seal. They aren’t afraid to highlight the racism, homophobia/transphobia, misogyny, etc. present in many of the movies that are considered “classics” of some variety. Through all of this thoughtful discourse, Weekend at Bergman’s is quickly building a remarkable new canon, from the ground up. While the WAB canon will never replace AFI’s (as one example), it does provide an exciting alternative, even with a responsible amount of overlap. I’m excited to witness the process, and I hope that it continues on its path for a long time.

falbopolisPut this podcast in the canonThe film discussion podcast you didn't ask for/didn’t know you needed in your life. Trenchant insight mixed with lowbrow goofs from two incredibly well versed minds in both films and comedy. The rapport between Brett and Joe is unmatched when it comes to this sort of discussion and each episode is a breath of fresh air. Plop yourself down to Bernie Lomax and make it a routine to check in each week, you’ll thank yourself later. 5 bags 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿

Harry ScarvesAn Honest Review of an “Honest” PodcastEach episode features some very defensive reminders that the hosts are indeed being honest about their opinions and analysis of each film. I’m not sure why they think someone turns on a podcast and assumes the hosts are being dishonest…in fact, they’re so entirely defensive about their honesty…I think they may be lying… Luckily for the listener, honest or not, Brett and Joe provide genuinely insightful points of view on both high and low cinema, some great hot takes on what makes a movie good, plus a healthy dose of that inappropriately hurtful banter that you can only get from two close friends with a long history working together! No notes!

Max_BeasleyFilm SchoolThis podcast is a lot like going to film school, minus the crippling debt and the cougar professor who keeps asking you “for a ride home”. I say that this podcast is like film school because just like my classmates at film school, it’s very apparent that both hosts have never had sex (Brett says he has a wife and baby, I’ll believe it when I see it. What, do they go to a different school?). Joe maybe has had sex before, but if he has, it was “soaking”, and “soaking” doesn’t count. Anyways, the podcast is good if you want to hear two white guys in their 30s talk about Bergman and Wong Kar Wai. The podcast is not so good if you want to hear two guys who have had sex before talk about Bergman and Wong Kar Wai. Or should I say, Wong Kar Why? Wong Kar Because nothing makes a man or woman less horny than hearing that the director of Weekend At Bernie’s also directed Wake In Fright. All kidding aside, Brett and Joe and the show are lovely. Must listen for fans of comedy, film, or fans of comedy and film who are also virgins.

TrixyMercurySo far so goodFrom the conceit of the show to the episodes themselves this is as fun to hear/watch as Brett obviously has singing that theme! I absolutely love seeing him sing directly into the camera — a real sight to behold. Never change Brett! I also really love the friction between Joe and Brett. At times it’s hysterical and other times (at least in the first two eps) it’s almost heartbreaking. I hope they don’t break up! I love their costumes, enthusiasm, and passion for cinema and look forward to more.
