Dan Carlin's Hardcore History

All Genres #150History #7

In "Hardcore History" journalist and broadcaster Dan Carlin takes his "Martian", unorthodox way of thinking and applies it to the past. Was Alexander the Great as bad a person as Adolf Hitler? What would Apaches with modern weapons be like? Will our modern civilization ever fall like civilizations from past eras? This isn't academic history (and Carlin isn't a historian) but the podcast's unique blend of high drama, masterful narration and Twilight Zone-style twists has entertained millions of listeners.

    Love this podcast
As a 11 year old who loves history and good sound quality I absolutely loved it!

    Historical figures
Awesome and incredibly well-researched deep dive into the life of Alexander the Great. I would also invest the 8 to 10 hours of listening to programs on Genghis Khan, Napoleon, and Robert the Bruce.

    Lost his touch
Wait a year for 1 three hour episode and you just lose the plot. We used to get multiple episodes a year that were long but pointed to one unique topic and perspective. What is the current series even about? Life was hard for Alexander maybe? What is the point of this?

    Fantastic
Interesting. Worth the time if you are ever able to sit down for a long period of time to relax and just listen. Perfect for zoning out or deep concentration. I’ve listened to episodes multiple times to fully digest the product. Thank you Dan!

    Ahistorical Understanding of Current Events
What a dunce. Look at his Twitter/X feed. He is so out of touch with reality and can’t even remember the lefties storming attempting an assault on the White House and then burning the church across the street on May 29, 2020. Makes me question everything he has ever said. Completely out of touch. The guy is qualified to be a minor league baseball announcer. That’s it. Unbelievable how this guy has made this grift into an empire. Well actual real hardcore historians will not look kindly on him. Such sweet sweet bitter medicine for the man. I am reaching levels of schadenfreude not though possible when scrolling through the replies on his account. His legacy is toast. Cheers Dan! 🇺🇸 Also stop taking 90 minutes on intro and setup. You really love your voice. So important. What a narcissist.

    Cringy Historical Background Noise
Its alright but as i have grown older i dont like it as much. Also i paid 70$ for all the podcasts at the time and didn’t get Blueprint for Armegeddon because it was still on the Apple podcast app. How the heck was I supposed to know that? The only way to get it now is to buy it. And honestly, its not worth it and never was. Cringy historical background noise

    Wow
Growing up as a kid and now an adult I have always been obsessed with history. The way Dan Carlin unpacks history unraveled a movie in my mind as I listened to this podcast. So sad that wrath of the khans has been removed from Apple Podcasts. Dans episodes on Ghengis khan and kublai khan are the best I have heard to date.

Great podcast don’t you dare get rid of supernova in the east, and on God, please make the World War II from the German side free

    Just another biased “historian”
If you can’t help but leak your political bias into your publications then you can’t be trusted as a historian. Dan’s obsession with pain, rape, and torture makes more sense now. Don’t trust this guy for history lessons, he will lead you astray from facts.

    The Best
I usually like very produced stories with sound effects, street noise etc. I don’t know why Dan’s “just talking” works for me but I can’t get enough of it. Really amazing. Best reason to have a phone :-).

    Biggest Fan?
Dan, I’m not sure if you have access to download or listening statistics- but if so, you might find me to be your biggest fan. And I’ve decided to share that with you 🤓🙏🏻❤️ This is the first podcast I EVER listened to (way back in 2010) and has been my favorite ever since. No other history podcast compares to yours, not even close. You and Ben are masters of audio documentary- and continue to impress me with every episode, which I wait for on pins and needles between each drop. Wrath of the Kahn’s absolutely blew me away and I continue to listen to it, although I have much of it memorized. Please keep up the extraordinary work, asking those thought provoking questions, citing your high quality sources (from which I value as a librarian and often read myself), going deeper than the facts can by themselves and creating epic, compelling and entertaining shows. You’re doing great work and are so so appreciated. Thank you 🙏🏻 ❤️🙏🏻

    Scab podcast
This host professes to be influenced by the MC5 and yet invites someone like Elon Musk on to his show to speak freely. The host is a scab and class traitor more interested in celebrating hubris than objective truth. When it comes time to Kick Out The Jams, I hope Dan Carlin is taken out with the trash. For shame, Dan Carlin.

    The greatest podcast around
Legit 60 2B/60 SB threat early in career. Power grew from warning track to deep drive, leading to 76 HR season in 2013. Middle-of-the-order colossus that keeps pitchers up until dawn. Refuses to bunt.

    Every episode is a masterpiece
The way Dan takes history’s grand stories and shrinks them down to a level which makes one feel like they’re experiencing them firsthand is truly remarkable. This stuff is better than fiction, and Dan’s way of posing some seriously worldview-altering rhetorical questions, what-ifs, and breakdowns of the oft-forgotten grey areas of some of history’s most controversial figures/events/actions is quite frankly the way that these topics should be taught to everyone. Dan is a master of the English language, with a passion for the subject matter that brings out the best in his ability to convey these stories if a fascinating, thought-provoking, and often horrifyingly compelling manner. Some of his best work if not available anywhere but his website (for usually $2.99 an episode), but the freebies are a good place to start and see if it’s for you.

    Brilliant
This is an excellent and compelling podcast that enthralls me while helping me to disconnect from the current state of affairs and makes my insomnia and chronic pain bearable. Thank you, Mr. Carlin!

    Brings history to life
Such an amazing podcast that truly brings history to life. From ancient times, through Rome, the Mongols, and deep dives on the 20th century. Each episode, and indeed every series, is filled with exciting detail, always set in the historical context, with insights from years of doing this work. #1 podcast for sure- and I listen to a ton of them with all my travel for work.

Wait is too long but it’s great content
Its the Best History Podcast. The wait between episodes has gotten too long- its like 7 months, wish we could get 6-7 hours! That said, Dan is a treasure and his work is outstanding. If you’re in to history- this is the best.

    Love you Dan
This guy makes my whole life better just by doing his job and everyone should listen to him all the time to make there life better too
  • The Nameless Twin
    Great but difficult
I listened to a few episodes of this a few years back, and found them amazing… except for how impossibly long they are! I follow several podcasts (physics, neuroscience, language, history, occult) and, frankly, can’t handle 5 hour episodes. I wish he’d break them up into more episodes. Five one hour episodes would be much easier.

    The best
I don’t know how Dan reads as much as he does and understands it all and is able to put it all together in such an accurate and a story like narrative that is so engrossing but he does. he is in a league of his own
  • Jack ,:) :)
    Simply phenomenal
This show is hands down the best podcast I’ve ever listened to. I started listening to this podcast when I was 10 and even then he was still able to enthrall me. Anyone who wants to learn about history in a more casual way, this is your show. :)

    We need you right now
Hey Dan, I know it's treacherous waters to wade into politics, but your perspective on what this past election means for the country, albeit separate from democrat or republican, but what it means for the country writ large as a successful Democracy. You're the only one that can talk about this from the voice of history and we need to hear from you.

Cant stop listening to these. He does a great job of animating his voice and laying out the information an a very interesting way.

    Killer fugue state.
I’m writing to let y’all know this is a banger historical pod to listen to at work. It’s interesting, well presented, and well researched. Now, I have had to re-listen to a few episodes because as you listen (if you’re me) past a point your brain fully turns off and listens on autopilot until the end. This is also a plus, however, because I also zone out my job and take a shortcut straight to the last quarter of my night. It’s great.

    Too quiet and too loud
It’s probably just me, but… I’ve been listening to Hardcore History for years if not decades but I can’t seem to get through the most recent episode. At times he seems to be whispering so I have to turn up the volume and then he seems to be yelling so I turn down the volume, then I just quit. My hearing is still good but I am getting older so… I’m just disappointed.

    Best work
This is where Dan is at his best. This is where he seems to do his best work although I don’t think he is any kind of super-historian but at a basic level he works at his better analysis and isn’t bad to listen to. Nobody should ever consider only one source on history however Dan is not the worst place to start study of specific issues and this is where his “amateur” status disables him the least because he seems to do his best to do the work of that discipline (historiograghic research). Dan is a dramatic guy and does some Bill Shatner level pauses for over-dramatic filler and it really pads the episodes in that way and if you don’t like it, don’t keep listening because he isn’t going to stop.

    Top Shelf History
It takes time for anyone to paint you a re-creation of an event in our history that text books, alone, do not contain everything a person needs to know in order to paint that image within their brain. A woman I once worked with in the 1980s described to me her experience of the ‘62 missile crisis like this, “our teacher sent us home to die with our families instead of here at school.” Nowhere have I read what she described to me in detail events of that day until now. Today her fear & truth has been confirmed after listening to this podcast.
  • Taber246
    Context
Dan describes events together with what is happening around them and how they affected each other till they make sense. He is humble and descent. Did I ever expect to listen 5 hours of a single podcast? Not I did listen to many long podcasts of his, I wanted more when I finished them!
  • Kinda lame
    Audio is terrible
Dude goes from quietly licking my ears drums like a asmr video, to destroying them from shouting. Its horrid

    Stop yelling when reading quotes
It’s rather annoying having to listen to the constant volume changes from when you’re giving background compared to when you’re yelling to read quotes. There’s no need to shout every quote while you whisper everything else.

    My Favorite Podcast
Dan Carlin reaches into the depths of history with a fine toothed comb and constructs a riveting narrative that transcends the common historical record. I have listened to every available episode of this podcast and continuously recommend it to colleagues and friends. The amount of research that goes into creating these podcasts precludes being able to release them as quickly as I would like, but I would not sacrifice the value of this excellent series in favors of quicker releases.
  • ZaneJT
Amazing podcast if you like history with an extra side dish of history
This podcast is like the cool uncle you saw only once or twice every year as a kid but every time you saw him he always had amazingly fantastical and detailed stories, Turkish candy and a shirt knitted by villagers in Kazakhstan. There is the subject and many, many detailed detours that give the listener context for even the ants that were on scene. Cannot recommend to enough people.
  • .H.I846
    Amazing
Simply the best podcast ever. He himself made me fall in love with history and the amount of effort he puts into these is incredible. Great job Dan!

    Fading from my view
Lack of regular content, episodes that are too long, and covering topics that are boring. If you are reading this and you agree with what I just said, I strongly recommend An Old Timey Podcast. Listen to the John Brown and Lucille Ball episodes.
  • why am I listening to this?
    Pretty good
I like the show a lot, however I wish that previous episodes weren’t locked behind a paywall and I feel that Dan rambles a lot and uses too many words.
