Eli1878yikes.It’s all fun and games until you check the hosts’ socials and discover that yes, all free speech absolutists are the same.

LiasumExcellent content that will change how you see legal issues across the spectrumThis podcast is fantastic. Legal issues related to politics is a bit niche, but if you follow politics enough to listen to The Daily, you will enjoy this content and be able to easily follow it. The hosts do a great job of providing ample context for you to understand the legal commentary. It provides an interesting and balanced exploration of issues from all angles. For new listeners, there are some small inside jokes (RICO hotline, Senate Twink Award for Belatedly Good Judgement) that might through you off during a first listen, but you will catch on quick and love the reoccurrence of these jokes as you get acquainted. Please give it a listen. You won’t regret it.

Definitely NicoleSmart, informative + even entertaining!Thank you, Josh + Ken, for helping to unravel the tangled litigation efforts so many of our respectable and not so respectable politicians, public officials, underpaid Aides, and various celebs generate— even revel in, at times. With the re-election of Trump, your podcast, in particular, is going to serve as a beacon of clarity and sensibility. Thank you!

pdxjkKen is generally excellent, but Josh? Not so much. He has a habit of repeating MSM and right wing press assumptions and narratives. Ken will often gently push back or reorient the conversation, but not every time. Take, for example, Josh’s continual use of the phrase “Hunter’s laptop”. It takes only a few minutes of reading or listening elsewhere (Emptywheel, Mueller She Wrote, more) to realize that there is no such thing as a singular “laptop”, nor was one “abandoned” in the manner which Josh repeats here. There are more examples of Josh’s glosses than this, but this latest really stuck in my craw for its sheer laziness.

JWunderBreadStellar legal analysisUnpredictable uploads but the wait is surely worth it. 10/10

Ander517Worth buying the paid oneAlways my favorite
-
Jason RudenWhy pay for sub-par contentDo you remember trialware software where it was short period of time to evaluate if this software product was any good and then when you paid for a yearly subscription and then you found out that you can get elsewhere superior product over for free that’s what the podcast is.
-
SanPedroScoopLove! But I’m a bit resentful…I used to listen to your old post cast and playing pretend lawyer with you. I didn’t miss an episode of All the Presidents Lawyers but I didn’t know that you moved! I’m mad I miss two years of the discussion!!!! But I still love the show.

Peter GuillamMichael AvenattiEvery time The Pope, LLC mentions Avenatti, one can be sure Chuck Koch is about to slaughter a few thousand innocent people somewhere as an offering to Ayn Rand. *** Never pay any attention to The Pope, LLC’s sidekick. Were it not for his parents, that guy would be moving boxes at an Amazon warehouse.

lj@ckLove itI loved Make No Law and this is even better. I recommend it to all my friends who are serious about the news.
-
MausNYCTotally original and entertainingThere’s no one else like these guys - intellectual, witty, very much on top of legal developments, prescient - though only out once a week. I learn things here that the pundits miss or leave out.

snowihte16Are they hard up for money?I don’t need ten minutes of Josh Barrow begging for money. It’s weird. Lots of podcasts have figured out how to monetize. Some with ads. Some with subscriptions. None of them take this route of annoying and shaming listeners. Respect your audience. This tells me you don’t.
-
A_F_A_SNot GoodA ten minute episode that cuts out literally midsentence asking for money to hear the rest? Artists should be compensated, but this is not how that works. Use your favorite search engine to look for "how to monetize podcasts" and how they are doing it here does not appear on the list. Catch up or fall behind.
-
Knute’s grandsonLawsplaining for lay people“Serious Trouble” is an irreverent half-hour of lawsplaining for lay people who follow the news. It covers an array of prominent civil and criminal cases, explaining what’s going on, if indeed the defendant is in serious trouble, and how media coverage gets things right and wrong.
-
amcatanzaroDisappointing8 minutes of content every two weeks and a whole lot of begging for $60 a year to listen to … responses to listener questions. It used to be a good show and now it’s just a nonstop ad for themselves.
-
Left Turn At ABQJust an adIt’s almost like Josh thinks people don’t subscribe to other podcasts to see how monetizing them actually works. Instead of cutting a full “free” episode and having “paid” content in a separate episode, he will literally mid sentence cut the episode short and tell you if you want to hear the rest you have to pay. Sad because Ken is brilliant and deserves better.
-
Mr.KrobsMy favorite podcastAdmittedly, Serious Trouble is the podcast I look forward to the most and am most visibly happy about when I see a new episode up. Have enjoyed Josh’s humor, insight, and the way he leads conversation for many many years and Ken is so incredibly funny and smart as well. Both have a keen ability to explain complicated legal stuff in a way that I understand, actually retain, and really love listening to. Thank you guys for such a quality podcast!!!
-
radiorentalFTWBackground fuzzGreat pod, but the background feedback or fuzzy noise drives me nuts! Would be awesome if you could fix that. Thank you!
-
mKeEsqFalse AdvertisingWhen this launched, they claimed every other episode would be free. Each free episode is hacked down to lure you into paying. Either make it paid or don’t. No issue with people making a living, but it comes off as desperate.
-
121664FabulousThank you for your pod

RaymondVVBE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT SUBSCRIBINGI tried to become a paid subscriber for this and accidentally signed up to pay for Very Serious with Josh Barro. I deleted my $60 year subscription right away but they are not refunding my money, even though I would subscribe to Serious Trouble. Substack just says it's up to Josh Barro to decide whether he will refund my money and he doesn't answer my emails. Kind of soured me on the whole experience.

Solo_Reviewer11Ken and Josh Reunited…for a priceLove the show but dislike paid content. I guess it’s the new way of podcasting…
-
Improbability_42Good content, annoying modelI enjoy the content and insight, but I can’t afford to subscribe to every podcast, and this one has really made mincemeat out of its free tier to the extent that it’s not really worth following. I don’t begrudge people needing to make a buck, but this is a Patreon feed in disguise at this point, and ATPL fans who can’t pay up are likely to be disappointed by the sporadic, cut down drops.
-
21883Not worth it without a paid subscriptionAs with ATPL, Josh and Ken cover interesting topics in a thoughtful manner. If you’re not interested in paying for access to the show, though, there really isn’t much to the “free” content that would make it worth adding to your podcast library. I understood the free version of the podcast would be full episodes, released at a less frequent cadence than the paid, but they seemed to have moved to free “teaser” episodes that are continued and expanded in the paid version.
-
KenZmnNot worth the timeI loved Ken and Josh on “All the Presidents Lawyers” and I loved Ken’s writing when he ran Popehat. But this podcast is nothing more than a sample of their paid website. The only content and information you will get here is them babbling about how informative the stuff they hide behind their paywall is. I’m guessing it won’t be long before they move to Spotify.
-
Metalupisglad to have them backI listenened to all of All The Presidents' Lawyers and am so glad the two of them are back at it in this new show. Great chemistry and insightful commentary on the political landscape
-
atkozieA rare gemHard-to-find grownup legal analysis in a tasty candy coated shell of dry humor. No wishcasting or partisan hacks here.
-
DonJMWhoa-oh-oh it’s magic!Mssrs. K. White and J. Barro create, with the indomitable Ms. S. Fay, a sparkling conversation such as one might find in the salons of Beau Monde Paris, or the cheesesteak stands of South Philly. A delight!
-
Ryantk_6Not Enough Cat And Abstention ContentWe expected more abstention and cat content given that Ken White is a cohost.
-

Psyduck 2021The thrill is goneOne show is not really enough to judge, of course, but this feels like the gang getting together to do a nostalgia show because they just can’t recreate the old magic on their own. Unfortunately, the spark is still MIA. And, for f—k’s sake, Google Karl Popper, Josh. <coins falling sound effect>
-
